Educate Your Customer on How to Get the Best Out of You

Knowing your customer is the best way of getting the most out of anything you do. But sometimes, you also have to educate your customer on how to get the best out of you.

Educate Your Customer on How to Get the Best Out of You

Are you helping others get the best out of you or are you setting yourself up for failure?

Sometimes I’ve heard young comedians complain about how corporate gigs are no fun. Well, the problem isn’t the office or the audience but your handling of them. Let me explain.

In a comedy club, the environment is perfectly set up for you to succeed. The audience comes in with the intention to watch stand-up comedy, they have a couple of drinks, the bar is closed, everyone is seated, the lights go off, the spotlight comes on and the show starts.

At a corporate show, more often than not, people are not there for the comedy. They may have come to collect an award or spend time with their colleagues. Now unlike music, which can run in the background, for comedy, people have to shut up and listen.

So not only are you forcing them to stop doing what they have come there to do, but you’re also competing with the most destructive competitor a spoken word artist has ever faced – the bar!

My solution to this problem is:

✅ Firstly tell my client to ensure that the bar is in another room, so the noise does not percolate into my audience and distract them.

✅ Secondly, I have the following announcement made 15 minutes before the start of my show: “We have a special performance starting in 15 minutes time. The performance will last for 45 minutes. The bar will be closed during the performance. So if you’re the kind of person who needs 3 drinks during those 45 minutes, top them all up and grab a seat. We’ll be starting soon. Thank you.”

✅ Why am I telling you this story?

Because often you may have something wonderful to offer your client. And for no fault of theirs, they don’t know how to get the best out of your product or service. So if you can invest in educating them on the same, it is beneficial to both of you.

Question:

Have there been incidents when you struggled because your client or customer did not know how to get the best out of you?

I’d also love to hear about when educating your stakeholders, internal or external, HAS helped you succeed.
